Parliament to discuss wildfires as MSPs return

Scottish gamekeepers have helped tackle the Cairngorms and Pentlands wildfires

Recent wildfires in the Pentlands and the Cairngorms will be the subject of Parliamentary questions and debate this week as MSPs return from the summer recess.

The blazes have dominated headlines in recent months, with the Government committing £3m to support businesses in Glenmore near Aviemore that were forced to close as the area was evacuated during the height of the busy summer tourist season.

On Tuesday, after 5.30pm the Parliament will discuss a motion submitted by Lib Dem MSP Andrew Baxter for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, on the growing risk of wildfire in Scotland.

The wide-ranging motion raises awareness of the growing threat of wildfire to communities, the environment and businesses and flags up the belief that the response to the fire in the Cairngorms ‘fell short’. It also raises the point about whether a cross-party summit is now required to address future fires and assess lessons learned.

Prior to this, a question by SNP Moray MSP, Laura Mitchell, will be taken in the Chamber, asking the Government whether it plans to update its Wildfire Strategy in the aftermath of the Cairngorms fire.

Scottish Gamekeepers Association members have tackled wildfires at the Pentlands and Cairngorms this summer

On Thursday, focus returns to wildfire with a question from Calum Kerr, SNP MSP, on the Government’s views on the debrief report produced in the wake of the Green Cleugh wildfire in the Pentlands, see: https://www.scottishgamekeepers.co.uk/latest-news/2024/2026-05-28-gamekeepers-praised-as-wildfires-see-wildlife-lost.php

Tim Eagle, Conservative MSP for Highlands and Islands, has tabled two further questions on wildfires, which are expected to receive answers by September 24th.

These are on how many fire stations have received training in controlled burning and whether Aviemore fire station should be designated as a wildfire response station, given the Cairngorms fire.
