Following recent residential break-ins in England where firearms,
shotguns and ammunition have been stolen, Police Scotland is reminding all certificate holders to
review their current security arrangements.
While there is no specific increased threat in Scotland, these incidents
serve as an important reminder that legally held firearms remain a target for criminals.
Please take a moment to ensure that your security cabinets are correctly
anchored, locks are fully functional, and keys are kept in a secure, hidden location away from the
safe itself.
Steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of being targeted include
- Always being discreet when transporting guns to and from your home address.
- Do not post social media updates that make it obvious you are away from your home
- Make sure your home looks occupied, use timer switches and don’t allow mail to collect at your
door
- Verify that security systems like cameras and alarms are fully functioning
- Store ammunition in a separate, locked container away from your firearms cabinet
- For extended absences consider the use of an RFD or another certificate holder to store your
guns.
