Why do your trap training now?

Scottish Gamekeepers are encouraging trap training

We’ve been asked recently: why the rush to get trap training done when the Scottish Government has not enacted the part of the Wildlife Management bill which makes it a necessity?

It is a fair point.

As yet, Scottish Government has not made its intention on the timescale clear.

However, there are clearly issues to think about.

Firstly, the Government could announce the timing at any point -  and quickly. Normally, we will be able to give members notice but we are dependent on the Government’s wishes. We also need to be mindful that there is a Scottish Parliament election coming up in May 2026.

Furthermore, if notice is given, it will inevitably kick-start a scramble (for those wishing to set traps) to get training.

If they don’t get that training in time, they will not be legal to set traps.

So, to avoid missing out and to prevent bottlenecks, our advice is to book training now, when you have time to do so rather than rushing around at the very last minute.

People will be busy with shoots and stalking just now but it is important to think ahead and get something in the diary.

We have the following training dates available (see below). However, if you want training in YOUR area, email the SGA office on training@scottishgamekeepers.co.uk or call on 01738 587 515 and tell us where you are. When we get enough people to attend a course on that location, we can notify you.
