New river gradings show modest improvement

Following on from a slight rise in rod catch in areas last year, the newly announced river conservation gradings for 2026 show a modest improvement.

Announced today (6th August) by Scottish Government Marine officials, 1 more river has been added to the status classed as ‘good’.

There are 2 more ‘moderate’ rivers compared to 2025 and 3 less described as ‘poor’.

Overall, 8 stocks have improved with 4 declining.

As is now customary, rivers will have until the deadline to appeal their grading, if they feel there is good reason to do so.

The consultation and gradings can be found, here: https://www.gov.scot/publications/salmon-fishing-proposed-river-gradings-for-2026-season/pages/overview/

The deadline is 7th September.
