Managing Wildfire in the Cairngorms

Following feedback, the Integrated Wildfire Management Plan for the Cairngorms National Park has been drafted.

The Plan explores planning, mitigations, prevention, fire breaks and collaboration.

If you have any thoughts, or can improve it, please use the link at the foot of the page, by April 4th

A note from the Cairngorms National Park Authority

In the absence of legislation around wildfire mitigation, nearly all decisions relevant to wildfire are made by land managers.

This draft Integrated Wildfire Management plan recognises there are a wide range of land management objectives across the Cairngorms and a corresponding wide range of views around wildfire amongst land managers in the National Park.

This plan aims to strike a balance and achieve a common high standard of wildfire prevention and preparedness across all landholdings.

We welcome your views on the draft management plan. In particular, if you have any thoughts on topics we may have missed, whether the plan goes far enough to address key issues, or whether there are any additional actions that should be taken, please do get in touch.

The draft plan was prepared with input from stakeholders including the Cairngorms Upland Advisory Group and key members of the Scottish Wildfire Forum. It focuses on

  • Preventing fires from starting.
  • Ensuring an effective response to fires that do start.
  • Building resilience in a changing landscape where that is possible.
  • Providing an assessment of wildfire risk to communities.

Deadline 4th April 2025
