Deer legislation in the Government's sights

New deer legislation is to feature in Scottish Government’s table of Bills this year - as part of a Natural Environment Bill.

First Minister John Swinney outlined the Programme of Government for 2024/25 at Holyrood this week.

Unsurprisingly further regulation on deer will be on the government’s agenda; a process which got underway with the abolition of the male deer seasons through secondary legislation.

Deer will come under a wider environment bill which will tackle a number of subjects including the development of a framework for setting statutory targets to protect nature and species.

Developing the government’s Net Zero ambitions, sectoral plans will also be drawn up for land use; something which is likely to include land managed for fieldsports.

Also relevant to the wider shooting/estate sector will be the progress of a new land reform bill.

The sector has been subject to a raft of legislation in the current Parliament but, as ever, the SGA will be doing all it can at Holyrood to ensure members’ interests are reflected in all debates on future new laws.
