The SGA and its impact

A quick Summary of some key moments in our history

The Scottish Gamekeepers Association has proven to be an impactful small organisation

Born in 1997, the Scottish Gamekeepers Association was set up by working people to protect working people:

Gamekeepers, deer managers, land and river ghillies and forestry rangers.

Since then, we have

saved fox hunting foot packs TWICE

Reversed the tail shortening ban, to protect Scotland’s working dogs following a 7 year campaign

Secured a new offence for damage to legal wildlife traps

Helped save the red deer of South Uist from eradication

Mounted a successful campaign to exempt local angling from lockdown restrictions

Challenged (and continue to contest) a complete ban on lead shot

Helped secure a small business relief to protect small shoots from sporting rates

Lead a campaign to maintain stocking of salmon rivers as a tool to maintain populations

Opened our dedicated training centre, training over 1000 deer managers

The SGA has developed the first course of its kind for night shooting

Helped write a new course on muirburn and Scotland’s best practice guidelines for deer management

Developed the first ever course for using thermal and night vision equipment in wildlife management (see launch above)

Today, we also represent shooting and fishing syndicates as well as falconers, individual sportsmen and women, helping defend their pastime

We have the largest social presence of all similar bodies in Scotland and continue to be one of the most effective small representative organisations in the country- with a proven track record in supporting our members.

We have dedicated Grouse, Deer, Fishing and Youth Groups.

This is just a snapshot.
