10 days to go- see you at Scone Game Fair

The SGA flag flies proudly at the GWCT Scottish Game Fair in 2021.

The SGA is delighted to be back at the GWCT Scottish Game Fair on 1st to 3rd July and look forward to welcoming members, supporters, families - and people we are yet to know.

At 11am (tbc) on Friday 1st July we will begin our 2022 Awards ceremony with the presentation of the Ronnie Rose Award for Conservation and Education as well as this year’s Long Service Medals. *

The Ronnie Rose award for Conservation and Education is presented annually by the Scottish Gamekeepers Association.

It will be great to see the tent packed out once again for the awarding of these immensely deserved prizes.

We will be showcasing the latest from our Year of Employment project, with a new film highlighting some of the many benefits good game management offers to Scotland, free of public expense, in terms of biodiversity and the quest to be carbon neutral by 2045.

We’ll be asking members to get involved, too.

Many members rely on the service of professional foot packs of highly trained scenting dogs, to flush foxes from extensive upland forestry blocks. Professional fox management helps to protect farm livestock, ground-nesting wildlife and birds of acute conservation concern.

The new Hunting with Dogs (Scotland) Bill wants to reduce the number of dogs to 2 unless a licence is granted by NatureScot for more.

We urgently need feedback from our members on what any licensing scheme should encompass, if it is to be workable for your needs. There will be official SGA questionnaire forms to take away with you- or fill in whilst at the stand.

We’ll also be asking your opinions on other key matters including the impact of Avian flu on the 2022/23 season. The SGA has been liaising with DEFRA and counterparts in England on this UK-wide issue but will be raising the matter in Scotland with Ministers and MSPs.

*The SGA Young Gamekeeper of the Year Award 2022 will be presented this year to celebrate the return of Moy Country Fair, on 5th August. The switch will see last year’s winner Jamie Renwick keep his trophy for (almost) the full year (the GWCT Scottish Game Fair took place in September last year). It also allows us to keep the nominations window open until Friday July 22nd, so keep getting those nominations in.
