TRAINEE STALKER - HIGHLAND ESTATE

Trainee Stalkers vacancy has arisen on our highland estate. The 2 year position will run in conjunction with Thurso college.

Shared accommodation with our other student is available although you will have your own bedroom and bathroom in a recent refurbished bothy.

The estate is predominantly red deer stalking but other duties will included habitat management for grouse, river management and general estate maintenance.

Ideal candidates will have a drivers licence with trailer entitlements, Argo/atv certificates, fac/shotgun certification .

GROUSE UNDER KEEPER - GLENKILN, SHAWHEAD, DUMFRIES

Enthusiastic and hardworking grouse moor keeper required to take responsibility for restoration of a historic moor area and regenerate the stock of grouse on a mixed sporting Estate.

Applicant’s primary focus will be on the moor, working in a team of 3 under the headkeeper within a pheasant and partridge shoot.

Applicants must have a full driving licence, firearms and shotgun certificates. Relevant training courses advantageous. Minimum of 3 years full time experience in grouse moor management.

Wildlife Ranger, South Region - £24,388 - £25,752, plus benefits                                                                                                     

Background Information

It’s an exciting time for us here at Forestry and Land Scotland and we are looking for a Wildlife Ranger to join us on our journey.

This is a great opportunity to work in an area of Scotland that is renowned for its stunning scenery and land based outdoor pursuits, so if you are passionate about working on the land and wildlife management we want to hear from you.

Our South Region provides the greatest volume of timber to local and national supply chains, supporting economic development. We also have areas that provide significant environmental and recreational value, such as Kirroughtree and Glentrool, with extensive areas of forestry on the Isle of Arran. These help give the region a wide and diverse range of activities to plan and manage on behalf of the Scottish Government.

The wildlife team consists of 11 Wildlife Rangers and 4 Wildlife Ranger Managers, responsible for wildlife control of . three deer species, including Roe, Fallow, and Red along with a population of feral goats and pigs.

We are looking to recruit a Wildlife Ranger for the region, with this role being undertaken within the Western area or the region. To help reduce work related travel and achieve a good work life balance it is important that the post holder will reside within a reasonable travelling distance of the New Galloway Deer larder.

 

The key responsibilities for the role will include:

 Supervisory Duties:
• Supervise deer management contractors and recreational deer management permissions on all health and safety aspects of wildlife management;
• Ensure compliance with our Operational Guidance Booklets, all deer related policies and industry best practice.
• Monitor all deer related contracts/permissions, such as culling, skills testing, ATV tracks and dealing with issues as they occur, keeping the WRM updated;
• Supervise and monitor any other deer related contract within the region, such as ATV Track construction or maintenance and deer glade clearance work;
• Monitor the wildlife management work of the Woodland Creation Framework contractors;
• Ensure the regions deer larder, deer carcasses and associated paperwork fully meets the requirements of the Scottish Wild Venison Quality Assurance Scheme (WVQAS).

Health & Safety:
• Produce hazard and constraints maps for all active deer management contract sites;
• Regularly review the deer larder’s health & safety folder, ensuring all documents are up to date, such as risk assessments and fire plans;
• Ensure the Firearms Testing Area is always fit for purpose by keeping signs and relevant documents in order and up to date;
• Assist with the compliance of Health & Safety matters associated with the wildlife management aspects of renewables projects.

Work Plans and Geographic Information Systems (GIS):
• Complete the deer management sections in regions work plans in consultation with the WRM and site wildlife controllers;
• Input into the Regions Land Management Plans in a timely manner to meet planning deadlines;
• Work with the district GIS technician to keep shape files up to date such as the regions deer overview map and ATV tracks.

Representation:
• Represent the Regional deer team at various meetings and events;
• Work with stakeholders to ensure collaborative and sustainable deer management across the estate.

Deer Culling:
• Achieve a personal deer cull as agreed with the WRM;
• Exercise concurrent rights on recreational deer management permission areas which fail to meet the agreed forest protection and cull targets;
• Monitor implementation of cross-boundary agreements.

  • Assist the deer team in compiling business plan submissions, providing and monitoring the regional Deer Management programme & financial targets.

Strategies & Plans:

  • Assist the Delivery Manager (DM) to review & update regional Deer Management Strategies and Deer Management Unit Plans.

Deer Culling Contracts:

  • Oversee contacts, from tender to close stage, updating DM of progress against programmes/expenditure.

Policies & Guidance:

  • Manage deer management activities according to the relevant policies and guidance.

Managing Protection Efforts:

  • Ensure all deer culling on the NFE is aimed at protecting our biological resources and tree crops.

Recently graduated Elmwood College Gamekeeping Student - Position Wanted

Recently graduated Elmwood College student where he was studying gamekeeping

From college he gained qualifications and valuable experience in the gamekeeping industry. He gained his Safe Shot qualification, Deer Biology and Quarry Species. He also gained experience in Deer Stalking, caring for and feeding pheasants and also running our own shoot on our estate. Also through this he has gained good communication skills and confidence.
