With severe weather persisting, shooters in Scotland are encouraged to exercise voluntary restraint in shooting of ducks, geese and waders including woodcock, snipe, and reared mallard.
After eight days of hard weather, under agreed procedures for managing the shooting of certain bird species,a cautionary warning is issued. The current period of severe conditions commenced ten days ago. The decision to show restraint in shooting should be made by individuals and should be based on local conditions.
If the same weather conditions persist for another three days in Scotland,it is possible that a decision will be taken by the Government to impose a statutory suspension of waterfowl shooting which would last for up to two weeks.
Members are therefore encouraged to take account of local conditions and in particular to show restraint if birds appear to be in poor condition or are exhibiting unusual flight patterns.
